A
writer knows the secret to the ‘Shining’.
Jack Torrence went to the interview at the Overlook…saw the place…heard
the story about the caretaker in the 70’s who went mad and killed his family…&
decided not to take the job. He stayed
in Boulder with his family…and started writing the book…as if it were HE who
was the mad caretaker. And everything
that happens in the film is Jack writing about a writer going mad at the
Overlook. As a recovering alcoholic…he
knew something about madness…& as an intuitive writer…he decided to process
his madness through writing, rather than LIVE it. For someone who left his job to write a book
that would have commercial appeal…this chance piece of inspiration gleaned from
the interview made the whole thing a no-brainer. And his key piece of inspiration…was
Danny. He felt guilty about how he hurt
Danny… wanted to make it up to his family…& knowing about Danny’s imaginary
friend…he had all the ingredients for a supernatural/ psychological bestseller. More than enough raw material for a book
without needing to lock himself away to try to write in an environment he KNEW
would not be healthy.
Jack
was a perfectly healthy man…processing his demons through writing. I think he succeeded.
